How To Connect With People Without Being Spammy
To Feel and Be Felt.
Your job in this industry is to be a master connector. I mean, it’s all about networking, so you must be able to truly connect with people. If you want to be successful, you need to be genuine and authentic. It’s so easy to take your resources and sounds like a sales pitch 24/7. But remember, no one likes to be sold to. Like ever. Okay, maybe not ever, but definitely not when they’re not looking for it.
But Julie, isn’t the sale the purpose of it all?
Yes and no.
Do you want to make money? Yes, but not at the expense of ruining your own reputation. When you connect with people and know that you helped them, that is much more than just a sale. That is someone’s success story that exists because of YOU. You listened to their problems. You found the solution that works for them. You made the effort to find them the right solution for THEM and not for YOU.
Stop Competing. Start Connecting.
There’s a natural order a conversation with a potential prospect should go. Because, again, not everyone is gonna work for you and vice versa.
- Know if the prospect is right for YOU. Not everyone is going to be the right client for you. You aren’t meant for everyone and that is AMAZING. So chat with them, get to know them, find out what they need and want. Ask the right questions and you’ll know whether or not to continue on.
- Just listen. When you ask those questions, truly zip your lips and listen! You are waiting for the “BING!” word. The comment that gets you to think, “Oh! I can help that!” And if it doesn’t, it’s okay! Again, you aren’t meant for everyone, so don’t FORCE the sale if that moment doesn’t happen. It could be just not right now or ever. Just move on to the next.
- Make the offer. The “BING!” and now it’s time for the sale. But here’s the best part- it’s going to come off so natural because it is. You literally have a solution to the issue they shared. A simple- “Oh! That’s what I actually do! Are you open to…” And there you have it… you are now chatting about the solution you can offer, which happens to be a sale for you.
In The End…
Connecting with people authentically isn’t that hard. It’s a lot of questions back and forth with each other until it hits us – Yes, I can help or No, I can’t. Carry your posture and head held high. If you aren’t getting someone who’s excited and is just like “hell yeah!” then perhaps, you should be thinking “no, thanks.”
Always be a human first and a salesperson second.
